Getting enough fluid has always been a challenge for me. Some days, I feel as though I physically can’t consume water. This is usually due to stomach bloating or swelling. It is important for all of us to stay properly hydrated, but how can we do this on the days it feels too tiring or we are in pain from bloating and fluid retention?

I have noticed that I need to stay properly hydrated especially with these hot Summer days! Lately, I have been sweating more than usual when going out in the sun. Truth is, the more I sweat the more water I need ! It also is crucial to get proper electrolytes into the body and drink fluid that contains potassium and essential vitamins too.

Usually to get more fluid on the days when it feels hard to drink water, I resort to fruits with added water in it like watermelon, pineapple, and melon. It helps me when I mark off a large bottle and drink fluids at certain times throughout the day to avoid any extra stomach distention. Also, ensure makes a clear drink that I will drink for some added electrolytes and coconut water !

What are your go to drinks to receive the proper amount of fluid during the day? What are some good drinks to help restore electrolytes and vitamins? Do you find it hard to reach your recommended fluid intake ? What helps you?

        Hi Louie,
Thank you for the information about that product. Do you know if it is a whey source of protein or another source? Just curious because things with Whey protein never quite settle right for me! Thanks again 🙂

      Hi Denny,
If you are still having this feeling with the diuretics I would say to talk with a doctor. I know many of us here also have gastro intestinal issues too and are referred to specialists for that. I am on a combo of meds for my GI conditions including things for acid reflux and IBS which also causes bloating for me. Maybe mention this to your doctor and see if they can refer you to someone just to make sure it’s not anything GI related.

I too suffer with fluid intake, water retention. There are days that the thought of another glass, cup or bottle of water sends me over the edge. My doctors are confused over the daily amount of water. My PAH, and CHF flares up this time of the year, more Lasix, more frequent use of Metolazone, stomach bloating, swelling of hands and legs.

Fatigue and fluid retention, along with
These heat and humidity, really Tires you out. I have tried multiple diets and I do not consume a lot, exercise as much as possible, weight fluctuates by 3-9 lbs per day. I have considered Lap band surgery to get the weight off and breath better

      Hi Jim,
I can completely relate to the types of flare ups that you are having especially in this heat and humidity. I am from Rhode Island and this humidity that past few days has been terrible. I wake up almost every morning with swollen hands and sometimes it takes a few days of a higher dose of the lasix to go down to somewhat normal. I hope they can find a good balance for you to keep you hydrated but at the same time less bloated! That is unfortunately usually a trial and error and makes you have to pay more attention to how your body is responding.

Louie, it seems as if you and @robert are having similar experiences with being thirsty and thinking you are getting too much fluid during the day. Do you notice differences in the swelling and bloating in the body when you are consuming more or is this consumption of fluid tolerable for you?

I have opposite problem. I am thirsty. All day. I used to drink around 3 litres before. I am thirsty all the time.
