  • How do you manage PH symptoms during the summer heat?

As we grow closer to the summer months, temperatures are quickly starting to rise into the upper 90s or higher. Looking back on my time with PH or even at my time post-transplant, I know just how quickly these higher temperatures can start to affect breathing, fatigue, daily activities, or even increase the concerns of skin cancer.

With this in mind, I think it’s more important than ever to discuss what strategies you use to help stay cool during these warmer or more intensive summer months as a PH patient.

For example, if you are currently a PH patient living on the West Coast, we are also now entering peak fire season, with California reportedly having its first fire of the season. I remember this was also one of the most stressful and hardest parts about living in Washington State, as the smoke from these fires would make my breathing much worse at times, even making me homebound.

For those of you on the West Coast, what methods have you employed to try to counteract the smoky season? Do you try your best to just stay indoors? If you have to go outside, is there anything that you have found that helps minimize your symptoms?

We are expecting high temperatures and severe thunderstorms in NJ over the next few days. Thankfully, we have air conditioning.

If you don’t have air conditioning, how do you stay cool and regulate your PH symptoms during heat waves?

I feel like an anomaly when addressing this question. I don’t get hot and I am constantly cold. It is in 80’s today in NE and I have on sweat pants and a sweat shirt. I am thinking the lowering of blood pressure due to meds may be contributing to this. So no need to manage hot summer months in fact I prefer it hot and humid.
