Fellow Bionews columnist Carlos Briceño, who cares for his wife, Jill, with Huntington’s Disease (HD), was caught off guard when asked this question by his wife.

Carlos writes about how this question caught him off guard. You can read his column below.

Do men talk about caregiving like women?

    Let’s hear from our members.

Do men think about caregiving like women do? We would love to hear from both sides.

Where are our men out there? I was hoping you could share your thoughts on this incredible yet exciting piece on how men versus women caregivers talk about caregiving.

Or, maybe for the women cared for by their spouses, strike up a conversation. Let your spouse read the column or read a few paragraphs to them. I had my hubby, Manny, read it and asked for his thoughts.

Let us know if you bring this up in a conversation and how things go.

Wow, such a thought-provoking question and column! Come on guys, share your thoughts on this…or maybe your lack of answering IS our answer, LOL!

I take care of my wife/house when she is sick, but she is rarely sick. So I don’t have much experience as a “care giver”.

My neighbor takes care of his wife who has been bedridden for several years from a stroke. As the guy in the article, he doesn’t say much. He can’t be away from her more than 2 hours at a time as he helps her to the bathroom. He figures that movement helps her out. He has the money to hire help, but wants to do it himself. When we ask him how she is doing……it’s always “about the same”. Sounds like her mind is going as one day he said “She can watch the same movie day after day and still is surprised of the ending.”

I think men are more are more “matter of fact” than women.

Since this was posted, I believe we have a few new male caregivers, so I thought it would be a good one to revisit. We invite all to jump in!

Quite a coincidence reading this today as it was only two days ago I had my six monthly with my Pulmonologist and in talking about my exercise routine I mentioned I sold the boat and he asked why. To take care of the Boss I replied and left it at that. Aside from her doctors and daughters no one needs to know the boss’s ailments and I’m not looking for help . Its a lifelong partnership .

“Ultimately, both her question and her answer helped me realize that the key to caregiving doesn’t lie in talking about it or what your gender is, but rather how we act — and whether we are pursuing an unyielding commitment to love, compassion, and devotion.”

I asked Dick for his thoughts. He felt Carlos really said it all in his last sentence. Thank you Carlos and Jen for sharing this. ❤️
