The Pulmonary Hypertension Association has announced that it is launching a new PHA Patient Telephone Support Group to help patients who suffer from pulmonary hypertension (PH). The support group will offer support to patients, especially those who were recently diagnosed, and will consist of monthly telephone dialogues for sharing thoughts and concerns about the disease. The new outreach effort will begin on Thursday, September 25th.
“Our goal is to provide a safe and caring space for you to feel supported and empowered by other patients also affected by pulmonary hypertension. While expressing your thoughts and concerns freely, you can develop friendships, share thoughts and ideas and learn coping strategies,” explained the PHA in a recent statement on their website’s blog, PH Daily Beat.
The PHA is dedicated to helping recently diagnosed patients deal with the disease, since thousands of people are diagnosed every year, and there is currently no cure for PH. The association seeks to provide patients with information and support for them to adjust to new life habits demanded by PH and its often life-changing symptoms.
The association recommends that patients request their Envelope of Hope and a free copy of “Coping with Pulmonary Hypertension: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed.” PHA also offers links, webinars, and videos for additional support, and suggests that patients create their own PH medical binder, as well as look for a doctor who specializes in the disease.
Connecting with other patients, “people who understand,” as the PHA calls them, is crucial in dealing with the disease. Therefore, in addition to the new PHA Patient Telephone Support Group, there are also a series of resources on the PHA website to promote interaction, such as the Patient-to-Patient Support Line, the PH Email Mentor, local support groups or PHA community of hope.
