In this video from the Vera Moulton Wall Center for Pulmonary Vascular Disease, Dr. Venicio de Jesus Perez from the Stanford School of Medicine talks about the simple pathology of pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Perez explains that in patients with pulmonary hypertension, blood is unable to flow into the oxygen exchange areas of the lungs, which in turn forces the right side of the heart to work much harder. The right side of the heart then grows too large and begins to fail.
He goes on to say that although new therapies for the condition cannot repair the damage done to the lungs, they can help further damage from occurring.
