In this short video from Lee Health Memorial System, Lindsey Fry talks about what pulmonary hypertension is and who is at risk of developing the disease.
With the help of nurse practitioner Mini Matthew, Fry explains that pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease where the blood pressure in the lungs is dangerously elevated. This leads to the right side of the heart having to work much harder to push oxygenated blood back into the lungs which can lead to heart failure.
There are many reasons why a person may develop pulmonary hypertension. The video explains that common health problems that can lead to PH include liver failure, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and autoimmune diseases like lupus. Other risk factors include smoking and a family history of the disease.
