  • If New Lungs Go Into Rejection Can A Patient Receive A 2nd Transplant?

Patients have to be reevaluated in order to be listed a 2nd time but it is an option for some.

I’m praying my son is decades away from this being a concern but it is very possible (I don’t want to say likely) the he might eventually need another lung or heart and lung transplant. Being in stage 3 kidney disease he might also be looking at a future kidney transplant. That is of course only if he wants to go through it all again and if he is eligible.

I’ve attached a link below to a video interview that PH News shared in 2016 of a woman from Australia who successfully received a 2nd transplant and why she needed one.

New forum member @alenaadarbehova mentions in her bio that she received a double-lung transplant in 2014 and another in 2017. No pressure to share Alena but if you feel comfortable I invite you to tell us a bit about your transplant journey.

Hi @colleensteele, thanks for sharing that video about the woman in Australia. I have known several PHriends who have undergone second transplants. After speaking with several PH specialists, they mention that those who have rejection from an earlier organ transplant may do much better with a second. But, I’m also aware that a second transplant would be under careful consideration and depends on more strict regulations. Have you heard this too?

Like you, I hope and pray that Cullen won’t need another transplant of any type at all. If so, hopefully, he’s far from that. Have you or his medical team mentioned another transplant to him as an option in the future? If so, what were his thoughts?

@alenaadarbehova, you underwent two transplants just a few years apart. How has your body adjusted? Were you fully adjusted from transplant #1 when the second one came along?
