This month’s positive is attending the PHA Conference and meeting some of our forum members there.

For medical appointments, I believe we have seen labs, the PH team, the therapist, and more labs so far. I intentionally tried not to schedule much this month with traveling for the Conference.

I know you and Cullen will be busy again this month, @Colleen. How was his appointment yesterday? Or is it today? How are you feeling?

@jen-cueva and everyone attending the conference…I am so excited for you! If forum members meet up I hope pictures will be taken and shared!

More lab tests to see if my high d-dimer is caused by MGUS (monoclonal gamopathy of undetermined significance) becoming multiple myeloma or lymphoma.

Consult with new cardiologist at another hospital system, upon the advice of my cardiologist here, who says the Duke guy is extraordinarily well-versed on clinical trials for heart failure folks and hemodynamics.

Possible consult with new hematologist, if I flunk the blood tests he wants me to take.

Hey, @brenda-denzler, I hope you will get some answers to why you continue to see that upward spiral in your d-dimer readings. Too funny; you made me laugh when I read about “flunking” your blood tests.

Thanks for the update. You also shared how much you have been doing while trying to help others. Take care of yourself, and we look forward to hearing an update from you again soon, Brenda.

@brenda-denzler it’s good to hear from you. I feel like it’s been a while. I’m going to be praying extra hard for your upcoming medical care. Keep advocating and stay strong!

Hi @brenda-denzler, how did your speaking engagement go? Was the crowd larger than you anticipated? I bet you rocked it, as @Terese Tuohey did her CTEPH session at the PHA Conference.💫

What about your appointments? Do you have any updates for us yet? You’ve been on my mind. 🤗

I’m sharing an update for @brenda-denzlerbecause she had some issues posting. Below is what she shares:

        @Colleen ,

“Colleen, I’ve just been reading up on your medical saga. I know you need to take care of yourself…but moving Cullen in to his dorm is actually a part of that, I suspect. Your heart needed to soar a little at this milestone, when you suffered through so much just to get him to this point. Congrats to both of you!

But sorry you are so sick, yourself. And your dad, too? Oy! Jen is right. You do need to be able to catch a bit of a break. I’ll be sending up a prayer that you catch a big one. (The prayers of a righteous man avail much, the Bible says. Well, I’m neither very righteous nor a man, but you gotta take what you can get, right?!!)

Jen, as for me, my talk went well. I kinda stunned some people, irritated some, and some thought it was ”AMAZING” — and that’s a quote.

As for my health. The repeat blood tests show abnormalities in my plasma cells (bone marrow) that could indicate either amyloidosis or multiple myeloma. I have been denied (by the hematology department at my hospital) the opportunity to see the hematologist who specializes in plasma cell disorders. My PCP is pissed about this. So am I. I suspect the denial comes courtesy of my usual hematologist (not a plasma cell specialist) who told me, when my d-dimer was over 1000 that it was not concerning and had not been showing an upward trend. Now it’s been over 6500 for two blood tests. We are trying to get me in to see another hematologist at a different hospital with whom I have a long relationship and whose judgment I trust.

Meeting with cardiologist as a second opinion, done at the request of my first cardiologist, was not fruitful when it comes to giving us any useful new ideas when it comes to my heart. He came into the exam room having pre-decided my diagnosis and when my responses to his questions were not what he therefore expected to hear, he ignored them. But he did order testing for a range of auto-immune disorders and that was negative. And he is the first doctor to suggest that a diagnosis of ”fatty liver” warrants a bit closer look at my liver, so I’ve got an US scheduled for sometime in September. That is also good. So good things came of the visit with the alternate cardiologist—-just nothing of a cardiology nature!”

@brenda-denzler I’m sorry you were having trouble posting. Glad you reached out to @jen-cueva for help because it’s always good to hear from you. Your words of support regarding seeing Cullen off to college are so appreciated! The infection has improved and I wasn’t hurting as bad so I was able to move him into his dorm without too much discomfort, and enjoy the moment!

My surgery date is scheduled for September 13th. A friend of mine since the 2nd grade is going to take me and bring me home. I’m finished the antibiotics and praying the infection doesn’t return before surgery.

Stunning, irritating, and amazing people means your talk was a great success. Reactions of all kinds means you touched hearts and nerves, and people need to feel something from both once in a while!

I’m sorry to hear you are still riding a medical roller coaster. Keep advocating for yourself and I do believe answers will come, and hopefully the best medical care you well deserve!

Well said, @Colleen, about @brenda-denzler ‘s speech. As I said, isn’t that our motto for life?

I’m grateful the pain and infection are not as bad, Colleen. But I know that nothing could have stopped you from helping Cullen move into his dorm. I hope he continues to do well and enjoy dorm life. 🙏Did his brother not get back to help Cullen get settled?

Is that the same friend who helped you get Cullen moved to college? It’s wonderful that you have those long-term friendships there with whom you can lean on for support.

I hate to ask, but how are your parents this week? Let’s hope and pray we can keep all of you out of the hospital.

Maybe you can take some “Colleen” time and read at the shore or something soon. You need and deserve some much-needed downtime and self-care, my PHriend. I worry about you so much.🤗🤗

@jen-cueva yes, the same friend who helped me load up the van is also taking me to my surgery and bringing me home. I’ve been blessed with amazing friends, including you!

I took some me-time today and got my hair cut, something I haven’t done since I moved to NJ 6 months ago! Funny how something so minor can make you feel so much better!

        How are you doing?

Woohoo, what a win, @Colleen! I love that you took some self-care time and got your haircut! That must have been so nice.

And the friends who support and surround you are so caring because you do the same, my friend. 🤗

I am OK, thanks. I have had some gastro issues this week, but last night and this morning, so far, I’ve eaten and kept it all down. I did a home COVID test because KK said several of her friends who had COVID recently had more gastro symptoms. Thankfully, my test was negative, so that’s positive news.

Will Cullen be back with you and your parents during Labor Day weekend or stay on campus? I hope and pray you have a relaxing weekend with no new health issues from anyone! 🙏🤗

@jen-cueva how are the stomach problems this week? I hope you are feeling better. It’s been sounding like Covid is spreading a bit again. I wonder if it has anything to do with kids returning to school and families returning to normal routines. Stay well!

Cullen doesn’t plan on coming home very often. I will be driving to him once in a while to take him to important appointments. He’s doing well. Really busy but happy.

Hey, @Colleen, I apologize, but I never made it to the forums yesterday. It was a Monday all day, although it was Tuesday! LOL

I had labs for my PCP and work calls, and it seemed I couldn’t complete anything. 😯

My stomach is better this week, thanks. But I am still not eating a ton; at least, I am not having nausea and vomiting. Yes, COVID is again on the upward move, as you mention, with kids returning to school; I think it contributes to that. 🙏

I am so happy to hear that Cullen is enjoying college life, although he is busy.

How about you? Have you heard back from your surgeon yet? Hopefully, you can get that done before anything else pops up with someone else, my dear friend!

Thank you for checking in. I’ve missed you in the forums, so it’s always wonderful to come on and see your posts.

Take care of yourself, Colleen!💜 You don’t have Dr. Cullen there to make sure you are! 🥊

Hi, @Colleen Thanks. I ate some chicken quesadillas last night. It was later than usual, so I didn’t eat quite half, but I struggle with eating if it gets too late. It’s like I’m too tired to chew. It sounds crazy, but it happens.

We will probably eat something good if I crave it this weekend. My appetite comes and goes.

Thanks and enjoy your weekend. 🤗

Hello @Colleen you didn’t answer your own question – how is August looking for you, Cullen and your Mom and Dad. Your plate is probably pretty full. I really hope you are also carving out some fun and relaxing time for yourself 😊.<div>

My August isn’t looking too heavy. I have an appointment with a new audiologist to see what might be blocking my left ear. PAH meds have caused hearing loss and the need for hearing aids, but the blocking seems new so, we shall find out. Also appointment with our Cardiologist and the surgeon to look at and set up a date for my hernia repair. Just had another SIBO breathing test and hoping beyond hope I will have a appointment sheduled with another gastroenterologist at UW. Not to bad with just regular labs.

@jen-cueva Hi Jen, your trip to the conference is a biggie. I am so happy 😊 Manny is going with you. Sure looks like a very full agenda. It will be so special to meet up with forum members. I am not going to tell you to take it easy – have fun, learn a lot and cannot wait to hear about your experience! But …. do take it easy, sorry, just could not stop myself! 😉 Sending lots of warm hugs Colleen and Jen and Love ❤️

LOL, thanks, @carol-volckmann , you cracked me up. We are always much better at offering advice to take it easy and not overdo it. But doing it—that’s a whole other struggle, hehe.

Carol, thanks for your positive thoughts and support as I prepare to attend the Conference next week. Can you say so many things are still left up in the air? I’m usually not so good, but for some reason, this has been a busy few months and mentally and physically draining. I know you and the other members can relate.

Wishing you a slower month but also some answers and help for you and Dick both.

Speaking of @Colleen, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She can’t seem to catch a break. She won’t be in the forums today and tomorrow as she is attending to her own health concerns. If I get her an OK, I will happily share updates. Just send her all the love and support we can for no. We love you, Colleen!

Hi @carol-volckmann, I am about to update you about Colleen. I know she appreciates the thoughts and prayers from you and Dick.

Aww, so not ready and organized just yet, sweet PHriend. But I know what I’m packing to wear, and my meds are all filled. But the hair appointment is next week. But I also am looking for a pair of cute but comfy shoes for when I am up walking with my aur in a smaller area. I found a pair at Marshall’s, but unfortunately, someone had taken one of my size and one of theirs, so only a matched pair. Two lovely ladies working there were trying to help me find another pair. I guess it was not meant to be, LOL.

Thanks for the love and positive energy. I’ve needed it big the last few weeks after being on steroids and experiencing emotional rollercoasters. Love, hugs, and positive energy back at you both! 🤗

I just wanted to share an update from our lovely co-moderator, @Colleen. Yesterday, she spent most of the day, if not all, at a local ER. She was in extreme pain. When I checked in on her last night, she was home and had been through some lab tests and CT.

Her diagnosis was an infected sebaceous cyst. She was sent home with some lidocaine for pain and antibiotics for several days before she needed to have surgery. This morning, she was picking up antibiotics, but I told her to rest, eat, and take antibiotics with lots of water. She said sharing an update and asking for positive thoughts and prayers was OK.

Our poor girl cannot seem to catch a break. Colleen, we love you bunches and want you to take whatever time to get better so you can have that surgery and be on the road to recovery. We all know your August was pretty busy already. Let us know how we can best support you and your family. Thanks to Dr. Cullen for taking care of you, too, 💜🙏🤗

Update on @Colleen: she is still experiencing pain when she moves. Thankfully, the surgeon will see her Monday morning for a consultation. She said she would leave with a surgery date.

Thankfully, Cullen got her some Tylenol for arthritis and muscle aches, which is helping better than the regular Tylenol. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

They have had and are having a busy month. Cullen leaves to college later this month.

@carol-volckmann, thank you for your love and support, as always. I owe you, and you are sweet and thoughtful. 🤗

Sorry for being MIA for over a week. Thank you @jen-cueva for updating everyone and thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. My consult for surgery went well in the sense that I met with a doctor who seemed a lot more knowledgeable at dealing with this. She expressed a lot of sympathy and acknowledged the pain I am in. She said the antibiotic the ER placed me on wasn’t doing anything, so I’m on Bactrim now and I’m starting to see the infection clearing. I can’t have surgery until it’s gone.

She informed me that the CT scan also showed a kidney stone on both my left side and right side and a gall stone, but she wants to leave them alone unless they start bothering me. Well, that’s what we did with this cyst and now look at me…but I get it. One problem at a time.

Okay, enough is enough! You get this over with and begin to enjoy yourself and find lots of places and reasons to Laugh Out LOUD!!!

We love you Colleen. Prayers and positive energy and of course, warm hugs🙏 🤗❤️🙏.

@carol-volckmann thank you for the loving messages! They mean so much to me!

Cullen’s move-in day at college is on the 22nd. I’m praying I will be able to enjoy that day without too much discomfort and that surgery doesn’t interfere. A friend of mine since the 2nd grade is coming over on Saturday with her husband to help me and Cullen fill the moving cargo van so it’s all ready to go next week. Cullen finally being able to physically attend college is giving me all the reason to smile!

Having that issue unresolved right now and now, you may have kidney stones and gall blader hanging over your head! Woman, you really do have so much on your plate. I pray 🙏 for you and send you so much love ❤️ that soon you can really start to laugh out loud.

I am thrilled for Cullen! Wow … what a ride he has been on and now off to college to live there!! Three cheers for Cullen.

I know you said you are getting help loading up the van Saturday – you must be so proud and that smile on your face says it all! 😊 Please, please do not overdo 🤯.

You will be in my thoughts this weekend snd Cullen’s. Sending warm hugs 🤗 filled with care and love ❤️.

Thank you @carol-volckmann . I am seeing an improvement. I had not heard from the surgeons office yet about scheduling so I called them. The person who answered recognized my name right away. She said I am on their radar and the surgeons are trying to squeeze me in sooner than later but they are booked way out. The doctor sent them pictures so they would be aware that this really can’t wait. I’m told I should know by tomorrow when they can do it. PLEASE GOD, just don’t let them say the 22nd, the day I move Cullen into college. I have this bad feeling that they are going to tell me the one day I can’t do it!

Colleen yu know you cannot put this off even if it on the 22nd. Cullen would e the first person to tell you you need to have this done as soon as they can fit you in.

Of course you want to be there to support him, help him settle in and give him the biggest of hugs. You do have friends that can help. Right now you need, especially now, to care for yourself first if the surgeon can fit you in.

It must be extremely difficult for you, but dear Colleen in taking care of yourself is taking care of those you love ❤️.

I am praying for you for an early date. Give Cullen my love and prayers 🙏 .if you ever want talk …. I am here for you. Positive energy and vibes and prayers to God to watch over you 😇

@carol-volckmann I’m going to be honest and a poor example for all of you, but there is no way I’m missing out on moving Cullen into college. We have waited too long for that day! I know I need to take care of myself, and I will, but I’m going to have to delay it.

I still haven’t been given a date and at this point unless they call me I’m not calling them until the 22nd.

Do as I say, not as I do! 😉

Hi, @Colleen. As many, even some of our supportive forum members, have known and reminded me, it’s much easier to offer advice than follow it!

Is today the correct move-in date? I know this is a huge milestone, and you sound like me; I would say the same in this case.

But once Cullen gets moved in, you must follow up with a surgery date if you have not heard back.

Congratulations to you all; we are excited as Cullen heads off to college! 💫🤗🙏

Hi @carol-volckmann and all, this is a minor update from our lovely co-moderator, @Colleen. Thankfully, she did get Cullen moved into his dorm, I believe, on Thursday. (I’m sorry, my days seem to run together sometimes.) Of course, that meant Thursday and Friday Collen was busy, and her kind childhood friend helped them as they moved in.

Although she hoped to rest Friday, she drove Cullen’s laptop, which arrived a day late, to him at campus and returned the moving truck”. She said, “I got home, sat on the sofa, looked over at my dad, and his arm is beaten I’m and hot.<b style=””> I’m at er with him”.

Of course, she apologized for not making it to the forums. As always, my sweet friend, our health and our families’ health are a priority. We all know you miss being here when things are so busy around you. We got this together!

When I talked with her later, they thought it was possible cellulitis, and we were hoping he could go home after a few more tests. But he was admitted, and she finally got him home this afternoon. And as she needs and so deserves, she was about to take a long nap. Oh, @Colleen, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I hate that you are thrown one thing right after another. You must be beyond exhausted mentally, physically, and emotionally. This week has to be less chaotic and slower for you. Please try to do something fun once you get some extra naps in, my friend. Know you are loved, and I’m here anytime, 🤗💜🙏

Thank you, @jen-cueva for updating everyone. I’m sorry it seems like there is always something going on with me. Dad was admitted to the hospital on Friday and discharged on Monday. It is cellulitis and the infection is still a bit angry but slowly improving with antibiotics. Since treatment seems to be slowly working they let him return home to recover. He is doing ok except returned home very weak. They never had him out of bed the entire time he was in the hospital and at his age, just a day of no movement weakens him. I might need to schedule some home PT for him. He has a telemed appointment on Thursday and I’m going to request it then.

Hi, @Colleen; you certainly do need a break, my friend. I’m always here to support you and our incredible forum members.

Yes, I believe it’s about your dad getting weak from staying in bed there. It takes a toll, and then we have to work harder to try and regain our strength slowly. Now at home, hopefully, they will get him started on PT soon. If not, maybe you can work with him and your mom like you were doing with her and often him, too, not long ago.

I wonder if they need to change his antibiotic. I would ask about this talented appointment if it’s still red and angry. 🙏

@jen-cueva actually it’s starting to look a lot better now. I can see that the antibiotic is working. He has one more day of it to go and I think we will both be happy when it’s finished. Waking him at 2:30 AM and 8:30 AM to take it has been exhausting!

Oh, yay! I’m so happy to hear your dad’s arm is looking better. I can imagine that early morning wake-up to take them won’t be missed when it’s finished for both of you!

All I can think about is that if this were my dad and me, it would be such a distraction that he would tell me point blank. But we also know they need it, so we do whatever it takes, just like we do with our kids!

Hi Colleen! Interesting question – in reading people’s responses it seems common for patients with chronic disease to be constantly dealing with issues. Maybe one day they’ll develop an AI bot that can review our schedules and automatically re-shuffle our calendar to give us a little break. Just a couple weeks with no medical appointments would be nice 🙂

As for me, August has been a busy one as I’m undergoing many tests to see if I qualify for a clinical trial. Lung scans, x-rays, PFT’s and a right-heart cath. In between these I have been in physical therapy twice a week since late June to improve leg strength due to chronic knee pain. All’s well.

Looking forward to Fall and cooler weather (finally). Best wishes to all!

Hi, @Perry Abet Mamigonian. I love your idea! When you find that AI bot, let us know. 😉

I know I returned from the PHA Conference and had labs already. As @Marcie mentioned, I’m exhausted, yet not at full speed again. You’ve been, so you know, too, right?

But despite your busy month of continuous appointments, I hope you’ll get a small break in between, my PHriend.

It’s always lovely tio hear from you. You know, often we are so busy managing chronic illnesses that keeping up on the forum, emails, and social media are frequently not updated with the limited spoons. I relate. I’m trying to improve my posting on SM. But that’s been an ongoing struggle, it seems.

Hopefully, you have had some nice taco dates and other activities between the busy calendar. 🌮

@Perry Abet Mamigonian it’s great to hear from you! Wishing you the best with the clinical trial! If you would like to share more about it as you move forward, please do! I’m really sorry to hear about your chronic knee pain! I’m looking forward to the Fall but I know the change in weather can make my arthritis flare up. I hope that doesn’t happen with your knee!

How is your lovely wife doing? Please give her my best!

@carol-volckmann move in day went very well! We had limited time to get it all done so we were a bit exhausted after but in a good way. Classes started on Monday and they are going well except for today. Someone messed up his schedule and he showed up for a class hours late. I guess the class got moved and he was never notified. He was upset about that but I don’t think he missed much. It sounds like classes this week are mainly introductions and whatever he missed I’m sure the instructor can get him caught up.

Oh no, poor Cullen! I know for us, it sounds like nothing huge. But knowing him and his personality, he is probably upset with himself and whoever dropped the ball and didn’t update him.

Yeah, usually the first week is a quick introductory class and maybe hand out a syllabus. But now it’s all online, so IDK what they do at intro classes the first week. I’m showing my age now, hehe.

    G’day ,

August ,mate what a month its been. A few weeks ago whilst pushing the marina cart full of sails all of a sudden I had a breathing issue ,pain in both ears extending to the jaw. Waited a couple of minutes and everything settled . Thought no more about it . Had my 12 monthly cardio cat scan three weeks ago and saw the cardiologist who advised all looks good except pressure back up to 54 so he will let my pulmonary bloke know who I see in November. I then happened to mention my episode at the marina and he gave me a script for an angiogram as it sounded like I was having an angina whatever. Had the angiogram the next day and coincidentally my cardiologist was there and left a message to pay my bill but don’t leave. Turned out my right heart artery was 95% blocked so next day had a stent put in . Had to stay in hospital overnight . They put a plastic balloon bandage pumped up with air using a syringe on my wrist where the stent was inserted and every half hour they took out 5 mil of air until it was empty and no bleeding . I was then allowed to walk around the ward but stuff me I knocked the wound and it started bleeding again so on when the balloon bandage again.. So no sleep.

Home nearly two weeks now taking it easy and starting rehab. soon.

Oh seems my sat. level is hovering around 85 which is not good apparently. Ha perhaps I’m forgetting to breathe.

    Bring on Sept.

Wow, @Terry, I hate to hear about the angina and then the emergency stent procedure. Did your oxygen saturation increase after they placed the stent? With that blood flowing better through there, your oxygen sat would improve.

I know your wife must be working full-time, trying to keep you “taking it easy, ” but I doubt that will last much longer. Rehab should help, too, and you’ll get up and into trouble again, Mate.

Please keep us posted, and also, don’t try to do too much yet. Thanks for the update; sorry it’s been a busy and not a good month.

Hey, Terry. You have been through some grueling stuff. But I’m glad they caught the blockage before you had a truly serious heart attack.

@Terry what an August you have had! I hope September will be a nice healing month for you and with it, improved breathing!

My dad has stents going on something like 20 years. They really did help him and may that be the same case for you! Please take it easy! Give yourself a chance to recover. Update us when you can on your progress.

@Randolph Reynolds is having difficulties posting and asked me to share the following update:

@Terry , from Australia I presume, is handing a bad situation. As part of my August medical enterprises there are a couple. My echocadiogram resuilts showed right heart pressures of 55-65 mm/hg. Slightly higher that two years ago but much higher that my right hearth cath of 40-50 about the same time.

Experienced a long exhausting day visiting my new PAH specialist in Scottsdale. There is a 4500 foot elevation difference and thus when I was able to to a six minute walk with no trouble. Once I got back to Prescott, the density altitude made me short on breath again. Now have to crank up my O2 tank flow. At least I’m still managing my illness.

I have been retaining fluid because I have moved to a retirement facility and they over salt the food (still tastes bland). Thus the Doc doubled my dose of diuretics for two weeks. That causes a lot more visits to the bathroom. After that I’ll get a blood check to see if there was any damaged to my kidney function. Up until now it has been fine.

A good church friend drives me down to Scottsdale (Phoenix). The new specialist’s office is further south and it has been ten years or more since I was in that area and it has exploded with new buildings/roads/people. Why move to a crowded large hot city? But they are still coming to Arizona.

@Randolph Reynolds I’m a little surprised to hear that a retirement facility is over-salting food! I would think considering the age group they are catering to they would be a little more health aware. It sounds like your medical calendar has been exhausting. Are you finding any time to do things you enjoy? Have you been doing any writing?

Hi, @Randolph Reynolds. Oh no, I’m so sorry about your busy appointment and testing schedule this month.

Yes, sir, that elevation is no joke!

Like Colleen, I’ve tasted food at retirement communities. What they serve is mostly unsalted and extremely bland, so they can cater to most diets. But I’ve also been at Assisted Living facilities where the food was incredible and flavorful. There, I would certainly have trouble with the high sodium content.

It’s wonderful that doubling your uterus doesn’t affect your kidneys. Hopefully, you can keep your electrolytes within their baseline, too.

I’m sending you hugs and prayers that you will get positive news as your labs are drawn.Hopefully, you’ve also found a few things to keep you busy at the new place.

Hey, Jen. Have a repeat of some of my blood tests on Monday, to see what has changed (or not) in the last 3 months. And on Tuesday have an US of my liver. First one ever. Don’t know what the blood tests are going to show, but I suspect the ultrasound will be only marginally interesting.

Hope your upcoming week is equally “meh.”
