The Pulmonary Hypertension Association, a non-profit organization with over 13,000 members and supporters, is joining other organizations from across the globe to commemorate a unified advocacy for pulmonary hypertension (PH) for the month of November. Dubbed Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month, November will be packed with activities and campaigns for PH support and information, and will kick off with “Color the World Periwinkle Day” on Saturday, November 1st.

CWP_iconThe PHA has posted a number of suggestions on how anyone can join this worldwide color-coordinated day, all in an effort to draw much-needed attention to this commonly misdiagnosed and fatal condition and get more people involved.

  1. You must wear periwinkle or purple on November 1. The PHA encourages PH advocates or “PHers” to visit the online store and proudly sport one or more of the PH gear on sale, such as Empowered By Hope wristbands, magnetic car ribbons, or a PH ribbon pin. A single order of one of PHA’s wristbands costs $2.00, but a bulk order of at least 10 pieces has a special rate.
  2. Take time to create a page about your personal PH story. Include your goal for fundraising and share it with your friends and family. Promoting awareness can have a great start with people closer to you, and they would be more willing to support your cause because they know you.
  3. Take advantage of social networking. Aside from spreading the word about your personal story page, you can use Facebook, Twitter, and other popular networking sites to post pictures of yourself in the color of the day, with your PH gear and join thousands of others using the hashtag #PHAware.
  4. Host a small PH event. It doesn’t take much to gather people under one roof for a noble cause, especially when you put a fun spin to it. Host a small house party, or sporting event. It will be an excellent opportunity for more people to learn about PH and they many ways they can help out.

The association is busy preparing for this year’s PH Awareness month, but none of their efforts would be possible without their generous sponsors, Actelion and Bayer HealthCare, in cooperation with Gilead and United Therapeutics.
