Although Vang was diagnosed with a hole in the heart when she was a young child, she recovered quickly from the corrective surgery and was healthy until after the birth of her child in 2004.

She then started to experience the symptoms typical of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Vang was treated for the next twelve years for the disease with drugs, but in January 2016 her symptoms worsened and she was told by her pulmonologist that she needed a lung transplant.
