Dr. Tandon explains that there are many different reasons why a person might develop pulmonary hypertension but some of the common reasons are other lung conditions like COPD, connective tissue diseases like scleroderma, a family history of the disease, smoking, treatment for other diseases like radiation therapy for cancer and blood clotting disorders.
It is important to establish the underlying cause of the disease so that it can be treated effectively, in some cases no cause can be found and this is referred to as idiopathic pulmonary hypertension.
