Are you allergic to medications or medical care products such as latex or chlorhexidine? How long have you had the allergy, and have you considered being tested to see if it remains a problem?

My son recently had an allergy test requested by his lung transplant doctor. He is allergic to several medical products, but the doctor’s concern was his allergy to several antibiotics and forms of penicillin. It has made treating him for infections and other emergencies very difficult. Most of his allergies were determined as a child, so his doctor wanted to check if he had outgrown them.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that he had outgrown all of them! Although it was a hassle to take him away from college to complete the test, it was well worth it.

Please share your allergy experiences with us.

Hi, @Colleen – that’s fantastic news: Cullen has outgrown his allergies. I have had an allergy to penicillin for years, but as far as I know, it’s only since I was an adult. But as a kid, I was allergic to mosquitos, which was not fun when we lived in the South! However, I think that allergy has resolved, or I’ve outgrown it,

I haven’t been tested, but I would think about it because I, too, have to be cautious with antibiotics. How long was this test? Was it an oral or skin prick test?

This is positive news, and we love that for Cullen!

@jen-cueva the test was long, about 3 hours and you must have a ride home with someone you know. I’ll have to ask Cullen how they tested him. He is very big now on me not attending appointments with him unless he requests it. I was just his ride that day.

Oh wow, that is long! But yes, whenever you ask home, let us know which type they had him do.

He has grown up so fast in the last few years, which is excellent for you both. Does it hurt your feelings when he says, you are only his ride, and you’re not in the room to discuss any issues? I would think it’s tough after being there and doing so much of it through the years.

That would be a great column if and when you want to return to it.🤗

Colleen, I am happy for Cullen! It’s cool!

I don’t have the allergies, I have food intolerance.
Jen, let me ask you, how did your mosquito allergy manifest itself? Was it big pimples at the site of the bites? That’s what happens to me. I read that the mosquito injects histamine under the skin. A study was conducted that in PH, a large number of mast cells accumulate around the lungs. These cells usually extract histamine. And people with PH can have a strong reaction to histamine (it focuses on the organization of the inflammation, it’s like an SOS signal)
I’m not trying to learn, this is just an interesting note. 🙂
