Pulmonary hypertension occurs when the arteries responsible for transporting the blood from the heart to the lungs become narrowed, resulting in excessive effort by the right heart ventricle to pump blood throughout the body. This can cause an expansion in the size of heart, ultimately weakening the organ.

In 2008, the miscellaneous pulmonary hypertension category was expanded to include the “other” category associated with PAH.  This allows for recognition of complex and poorly understood links between systemic disorders, blood disorders, metabolic disorders and other medical issues and PAH.
