• Nasal Dryness

Posted by carolynn on January 9, 2025 at 5:24 pm

Hi… have another question. I have a lot of trouble and discomfort with nasal dryness. I checked online and read about a product called “Ayr” which helps a little and I got some nasal saline spray which was also recommended. Any tips on something that might work a little better. It’s very uncomfortable at times.

    Thanks!

Hi @Carolynn , nasal dryness is such an ongoing problem when using oxygen. Are you using a humidifier bottle on your concentrator? That also helps. I use the Ayr gel and a saline nasal spray, too.

But, we also have an older discussion where others share their tips with dry nose and oxygen. I’ll share that below and you may find some other ideas, too.

I’m grateful you feel comfortable sharing your experiences and asking questions, This is how we support each other. 🤗

@Carolyn @jen-cueva I can sympathize with the nasal dryness and can only imagine how much worse it can be when you are on oxygen. I’m not on oxygen but for at least the past year or so the inside of my nose has been so dry and itchy. It drives me crazy! I’ve read that oddly enough this is a common symptom for women who are aging and in their 50s, which I am.

I haven’t tried nasal spray because I’ve heard that other issues can develop if the spray is overused. What kind do you use?

Hi @Colleen , I understand how a dry nose can be attributed to age. It also would probably depend on using oxygen or not, humidity in the air we live, and so much. It’s a nuisance; I use a generic saline nasal spray, and also the Ayr gel or nasal spray.

With my age, diuretics, low humidity here, all add to my skin in general to be more dry. I’m often rubbing lotion or body oils on my hands and legs.

Hi… First of all, thanks Jen Cueva for the info you sent on nasal dryness. I see I am definitely not alone with this issue. Colleen, I am presently using a saline spray, but I use fluticasone nasal spray too because I have allergies. I have the Ayr gel but just ordered the Ayr spray. With the info I have now, I am sure I will find something that will help alleviate some of this nasal dryness. I never would have guessed that using oxygen could cause this problem.

Hi, @Carolynn , I know. Isn’t it strange that we never think of simple things until they affect us, like nasal dryness from oxygen? These little things can be such nuisances. I’m happy to help; that’s what we are here for, my PHriend.

And even after almost twenty years with my PH diagnosis, I continue to learn new tips and tricks from you all.

Are you experiencing snow or extreme cold weather in PA this week? Hopefully, your week is going well.

Hi Jen-Cueva… Yes, keep getting hit with snow, high winds and frigid temps here in PA. Another snow coming Sunday.

The Ayr gel and sprays are really helping. Not a 100%, but certainly better than what it was before. Also, I have found that the really cold temperatures and the wind when outside makes it harder to breathe.

Take care and hope all is well with you.
